The inclusion of G99 functions came about due to the UK's adoption of the EU Commission Regulation on harmonizing network standards, specifically the Requirements for Generators (RfG), into GB Distribution and Grid Codes.

A significant alteration is the transition from Vector to ROCOF (Rate of Change of Frequency) protection for detecting the rate of change in system frequency, achieved through continuous sampling of mains voltage frequency. ROCOF now stands as the sole approved method for detecting Loss of Mains.

The unit's protection settings are established during manufacturing, with certain settings permanently fixed and others locked to authorized personnel only.
